CECIL ARDEN (MEZZO-SOPRANO) (NEW YORK CITY, DECEMBER 15, 1894 – SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 4, 1989)

 

 

 

 

She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in January 1918 in the small role of Vannard in the premiere of Mascagni’s Lodoletta, performing alongside Enrico Caruso and Geraldine Farrar. She remained a member of the Metropolitan Opera until 1924. In 1918, she sang the role of the Novice Mistress in the world premiere of Puccini’s Suor Angelica, and in 1920, she appeared in the premiere of Leoncavallo’s Zazà. However, her work was largely limited to comprimario roles.

After a one-year hiatus, she performed in two Sunday Night Concerts at the Metropolitan Opera during the 1925–26 season. From then on, she worked exclusively as a concert singer. In 1920, six of her recordings were released on Edison records.
