MARKO VUŠKOVIĆ (SUPETAR, BRAC, CROATIA, JULY 21, 1877 – ZAGREB, CROATIA, FEBRUARY 24, 1960)
He studied singing at the conservatoire in Split and made his debut in 1904 as Mephisto in Faust, as a member of the Czech opera troupe that performed in Split. He then went to Vienna, where he perfected his vocal technique under J. Gänsbacher, and later studied in Berlin with Lilli Lehmann. In the 1905-1906 season, he appeared at the Stadttheater in Troppau (Opava). During the 1906-1908 season, he sang at the Stadttheater in Würzburg. From 1909 to 1913, he was active at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb (Agram). From 1914 to 1921, he was a member of the Volksoper in Vienna. He returned to the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb from 1921 to 1925, later working there as a director and vocal pedagogue. Notable singers like tenor Tino Pattiera and soprano Daniza Ilitsch were among his pupils.
In 1907, he guested at the Stadttheater in Bern (Switzerland), and also sang in Berlin, Prague, and Zurich. In 1921, he undertook a tour of South America. His extensive repertoire included roles such as Don Giovanni, Nelusco in L’Africaine, Nilakantha in Lakmé, Telramund in Lohengrin, Wotan, Boris Godunov, Amonasro in Aida, and Scarpia in Tosca.
