EMIL POLLERT, BORN EMIL POPPER (LIBLICE AT MĚLNÍK, 20 JANUARY, 1877 – PRAGUE, 23 OCTOBER, 1935)

He studied singing in Prague under František Pivoda and Maurice Wallerstein, making his debut in 1898 at the Olomouc City Theater as the Hermit in Weber’s Freischütz. In 1900, he was engaged by the Prague National Theater, where he enjoyed a remarkable career until his death. He appeared on stage over 5,100 times in 178 different roles, sometimes performing in seven shows in one week.

On April 27, 1927, he participated in the Prague National Theater premiere of Jaromir Weinberger’s opera Schwanda der Dudelsackpfeifer, followed by the October 8, 1928 premiere of O. Jeremias’ Die Brüder Karamasow. In 1926, he also performed in the premiere of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck. He made guest appearances in Vienna, Warsaw, and Bucharest and, in his later years, worked as a director. He passed away suddenly at the Slavia café in Prague while in the company of singers from the Prague Opera.
