Description
RICHARD KUBLA (OSTRAVA, 11 FEBRUARY, 1890 – PRAHA, 9 JULY, 1964)
As a child, he learned the violin and already appeared as a soloist at the age of seven. Nevertheless, his uncle, who led a church choir, advised him to train his voice. He became a pupil of Bohumil Pták in Prague. Later, he went to Vienna to study at the Vienna Academy of Music and the Performing Arts, where, in 1914, he made his opera debut at the Wiener Volksoper as Rodolfo in La Bohème. He remained a member of the Wiener Volksoper until 1920, performed during the 1920–24 season at the German Theatre in Prague, and then worked as a regular guest artist at the Czech National Theatre in Prague until 1945.
In the 1932–33 and 1936–38 seasons, he was again engaged by the Wiener Volksoper. He made guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera (1919, 1935, 1937) and at opera houses in Munich, Hamburg, Budapest, Belgrade, Trieste, and Cairo. He also performed in the United States, appearing in New York and Chicago.
He mastered a stage repertoire of about 130 roles, including many of Wagner’s characters (Erik, Lohengrin, Stolzing, Parsifal, Siegmund), Hans in The Bartered Bride, the Prince in Rusalka, Radames in Aida, Cavaradossi in Tosca, the Duke in Rigoletto, and Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, as well as several operetta roles.
