THEODOR SCHÜTZ (PRAGUE, 26 JULY, 1878 – PRAGUE, 28 AUGUST, 1961)

 

 

 

 

His real name was Bohdan Procházka. From 1897 to 1900, he studied at the Pivodově singing school and privately with K. Kovařovic. He made his debut at the National Theatre of Prague in Wagner’s Lohengrin in 1899. Later, he joined F. Trnky’s opera company in 1902, sang in Pilsen (1902–1903), and at the National Theatre in Brno (1903–1905), where he performed in the world premiere of Janáček’s famous opera Jenůfa.

Afterward, he went to Vienna to study singing with E. Robinson (1905–1907). With Robinson’s assistance, he first joined the local Hofoper and was later engaged by the German Theatre in Olomouc. During the 1907–1908 season, he appeared at the Hofoper Wien, and from 1908 to 1911, he performed at the Volksoper Wien. He had a brief stint in Berlin before joining the National Theatre of Prague in 1911, where he remained a member for 27 years, retiring in 1938.

In 1913, he appeared in the Prague premiere of Tristan und Isolde and the following year in the local première of Parsifal. On April 27, 1927, he sang in the premiere of Jaromir Weinberger’s opera Schwanda der Dudelsackpfeifer. Internationally, he gained recognition for his guest performances abroad, including successful appearances in North America.
