NIELS JUEL SIMONSEN (COPENHAGEN, 16 MAY, 1846 – COPENHAGEN, 25 MAY, 1906)

 

 

 

 

His mother, Catharina Simonsen (1816–1849), was a well-known singer, and his father, Hans Simonsen (1810–1857), played first violin at the Copenhagen Royal Opera. After completing his training, he made his debut at the Copenhagen Opera in 1868 as the title hero in Marschner’s Hans Heiling and remained a member of this opera house throughout his long career. He notably sang the role of Saul in the premiere of Carl August Nielsen’s Saul og David on November 28, 1902. In addition to his opera work, he had a wide repertoire and was highly popular in Copenhagen, both on the opera stage and in the concert hall. He also worked as a singing teacher in the Danish capital.
