THORKILD NOVAL (DENMARK, 18 MAY, 1903 – DENMARK, MARCH, 1958)
He received his education in Rome and Paris and made his debut as a baritone in France. In 1928, he gave recitals in Copenhagen. He continued his education in Berlin, where he was a pupil of Hermann Gura. In 1931, he appeared as a baritone at the Städtische Opernhaus in Berlin. Later, he was retrained by the pedagogue Ivo Ross as a tenor and, during the 1933-1935 seasons, sang as a tenor at the Berlin Staatsoper. In 1935, he performed at the Volksoper in Berlin in the premiere of the operetta Schach dem König by W. W. Goetze. In the 1935-1936 season, he was engaged by the Stadttheater in Kiel. From 1936 to 1944, he was a member of the Staatsoper in Hamburg. During the 1936-1937 season at the Glyndebourne Festival, he had a significant success as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte. He made successful guest appearances in Paris, London, Belgrade, Sofia, and New York. In the 1938-1941 seasons, he performed at the Festival of Zoppot as the Mime in Das Rheingold and as the Steersman in Der fliegende Holländer. Since 1950, he lived again in Denmark.
