Originally, he was employed in the state telegraph service, where his vocal talent was discovered in an amateur competition. He then trained as a singer at the Royal Copenhagen Opera’s opera school under Vilhelm Herold and Valdemar Lincke, with further studies under Albert Huberty in Paris. In 1928, he made his debut at the Copenhagen Opera as Mephisto in Gounod’s Faust and remained active there until 1969, performing for nearly 40 years.

His extensive repertoire included roles such as Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Salomon in Saul og David, Henrik in Maskarade by Carl Nielsen, Daland in Der fliegende Holländer, the Landgrave in Tannhäuser, King Heinrich in Lohengrin, Pater Guardian in La forza del destino, and Porgy in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.

He also made guest appearances in Hungary, France, and various Scandinavian countries and was a successful concert and oratorio soloist, recording for Columbia, HMV, Tono, Parlophon, and Haydn Society. He frequently appeared on the radio, taught at the Funen Music Conservatory, and served as chairman of the Music Students’ Association from 1956 to 1960. He was married to pianist Guldborg Laursen (1903–2002) and was the father of actress Ghita Nørby and opera singer Claus Nørby. In 1942, he was honored as a Knight of the Dannebrog.
