DANIZA ILITSCH (DANICA ILIĆ) (BELGRADE, KINGDOM OF SERBIA, 21 FEBRUARY, 1914 – VIENNA, AUSTRIA, 15 JANUARY, 1965)

 

 

 

 

She completed her vocal studies at the Stanković Conservatory in Belgrade and later in Berlin. She made her debut in 1936 at the Berlin State Opera as Nedda in Pagliacci. From 1938 to 1947, she enjoyed great success at the Vienna State Opera and also appeared in Germany, Austria, and Italy. In 1947, she joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York, making her debut as Amelia in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, though she remained with the company for only one season. In 1951, she sang Chrysothemis in R. Strauss’s Elektra at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence. She also appeared as a guest in Prague and Milan, and later sang primarily at the major opera houses of South America. From 1959 onward, she lived a secluded life in Vienna.

Her expressive soprano voice was particularly admired in dramatic roles of the Italian repertoire. She recorded for Supraphon and also appeared on the Telefunken and Cetra labels (Elektra). On Classic Editions she can be heard as Amelia in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera (Metropolitan Opera, 1947), and on Sony/Schwann (Edition Belvedere) she sings archival recordings from the Vienna State Opera, including Aida.
