KAREL CORNELIS BARTHOLOMEUS BUTTER, KNOWN IN THE NETHERLANDS AS CAREL BUTTER, ABROAD AS CAREL VAN HULST (AMSTERDAM, DECEMBER 20, 1881 – SAN FRANCISCO, APRIL 30, 1937)

 

 

 

 

He received his education in Amsterdam and Berlin, studying with Cornélie van Zanten, among others, and made his debut in 1906 at the Court Opera in Berlin as Silvio in Pagliacci. After a successful guest performance, he was engaged in 1911 by the Court Opera in Vienna, where he remained for only a few months. In 1914, he made guest appearances at Covent Garden in London as Amfortas and Telramund. He had already appeared there in 1913 in the premiere of Méhul’s opera Joseph. In 1913, he also visited Russia. During the First World War, he performed under the name Carel Butter with smaller opera companies in Holland, including appearing in 1918 with the Residentie Opera-Vereeniging in the Dutch premiere of Verdi’s Falstaff in the title role. In the 1915-1916 season, he sang with the Italian Opera in Holland, performing roles such as Amonasro in Aida and Escamillo in Carmen. In the 1917-1918 season, he was a member of the Chicago Opera. In 1919, he returned to Covent Garden as Rigoletto. Later, he worked as a pedagogue in San Francisco
