JOZEF MARIE THEODOOR ORELIO (JOS M. ORELIO) (‘S-HERTOGENBOSCH, 10 APRIL, 1854 – DEN HAAG, 25 MARCH, 1926)
He initially worked as a teacher before pursuing a career in singing. After completing his vocal studies, he joined the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, where he quickly became one of the most popular singers of the theater. He was particularly known for his interpretations of roles in Richard Wagner’s operas, creating iconic portrayals for Dutch audiences as Wotan, Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Wolfram in Tannhäuser, and Telramund in Lohengrin.
In 1899, he made a guest appearance at the Hoftheater in Hannover, further establishing his reputation. He also gave concerts in Berlin in 1895 and 1901, showcasing his versatility as a performer. His talent led him on a tour through Russia, expanding his influence beyond the Netherlands.
In 1906, he performed at Covent Garden in London, taking on the roles of Pizarro in Fidelio and Kothner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, marking his presence on the international stage. His career was distinguished by his powerful interpretations of Wagnerian roles and his contributions to the Dutch opera scene.
