JOSEF GROENEN (WAALWIJK, 11 MAY, 1885 – HAMBURG, 29 MARCH, 1959)

 

 

 

 

He studied singing under Srudien in Amsterdam, then in Milan and Stuttgart. He made his debut in 1913 at the Municipal Theatre of Mainz as the Fliegende Holländer in Wagner’s opera of the same name. During the 1914–15 season, he sang at the Municipal Theatre of Hamburg; from 1915 to 1916, at the Court Opera of Vienna; and in the 1916–17 season, at the Berlin Court Opera. From 1917 until the end of his career in 1944, he was a member of the Hamburg State Opera.

From 1923 to 1926, he appeared regularly as a guest at the Vienna State Opera. Guest performances took him to Amsterdam (1920), the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona (1928), the Städtische Oper in Berlin (1931), the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels (1935), and to various opera houses in France and Italy. In 1932, he sang in Götterdämmerung at The Hague.

In Hamburg, he performed in the 1920 premiere of Clemens von Franckenstein’s opera Li-Tai-Pe. He spent his retirement in Hamburg.
