LOUIS VAN DE SANDE (TILBURG, NETHERLANDS, 18 NOVEMBER, 1887 – BERLIN, GERMANY, 25 JULY, 1954)

His real name was Petrus Aloysius van der Sande. Originally a painter, he studied singing at the Berlin Conservatory under Anton Sistermans. He made his debut in 1913, and the following year, he was engaged by the Hofoper in Berlin, where he achieved significant success, particularly in Wagner’s operas. In 1917, he performed in Wagner’s Parsifal at this opera house in the presence of Emperor Wilhelm II.

He made guest appearances on German and Dutch operatic stages, including a notable performance of Wagner’s Siegfried at the Opera in Gdansk in 1913. During the 1920s, he had a significant career as a broadcasting company singer in Berlin. In 1924, he traveled with an opera troupe, escorted by Cornelis Bronsgeest, around Holland, where he performed in concerts as well as in opera and operetta performances.

In 1930, he became a pedagogue at the Church Music School of the Episcopal Ordinariats in Berlin. From that time, he focused on oratorio singing but returned to opera performance after the Second World War.
