Description
JAN CAREL VAN LEEUWEN BOOMKAMP (BORCULO, NETHERLANDS AUGUST 11, 1906 – HUIZEN, NETHERLANDS MARCH 11, 2000)
He was the son of preacher Willem Diederik van Leeuwen Boomkamp and Christina Maria Catharina Damsté. He himself married the German Anna Jacoba Ronge. Daughter Liesbeth van Leeuwen Boomkamp was a TV producer and was married to Rob Swanenburg. During his studies at a Utrecht gymnasium he already received lessons on the cello from Ed / Eduard Ferrée. He left the gymnasium on the advice of Gérard Hekking, also his teacher, in 1922 to devote himself to music and was able to study in Paris through a state scholarship. In 1924 he was appointed cellist of the Haarlem Orchestra Association, but less than five months later he was sitting in the chair of the solo cellist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. He would play there until 1931. Various composers including Henk Badings (Cello Concerto No. 2), Rudolf Escher and Hendrik Andriessencomposed works for him. At a later age he specialized in chamber music and was a member of the Netherlands String Quartet, Alma Musica, Musica Antiqua and De Bohemers, among others. He combined performances with teaching at the Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague conservatories. Gustav Leonhardt and Anner Bijlsma were his students. Van Leeuwen Boomkamp also became known as a player of the violoncello piccolo and viola da gamba. As a lover he collected old musical instruments, which came to the attention of the Dutch and international music press. His work also published the book De klanksfeer der early music (1947); his collection was described by John Henry van der Meer in The Carel van Leeuwen Boomkamp collection of old musical instruments (1971). The collection was purchased by the Haags Gemeentemuseum.
