Description
CORNELIUS VAN VLIET (ROTTERDAM, 9 JANUARY, 1889 — UNITED STATES, 25 MARCH, 1963)
He was the son of cigar maker Teunis van Vliet and Petronella Johanna van Stigt Thans. He himself was married to Elsa Schmidt, according to the 1918 deed of naturalization. He received his first music lessons from his father, but on violin and piano. At one point he preferred the cello, where a friend from his father’s side (cellist Höhler) helped him on his way. That switch led to lessons with Oscar Eberle (1842-1901) and Isaäc Mossel . During that period he already played with the Concertgebouw Orchestra , but also performed as a soloist. He achieved greater fame in Leipzig ; he played in Hans Winderstein ‘s orchestra . From 1904 he was a member of Oscar Nedbal ‘s Philharmonic Orchestra of Bohemia , based in Prague. Performances in Eastern Europe took him as far as Finland , where he joined the local orchestra in Helsinki . He was also a music teacher at the conservatory there (1904-1905). By the way, he left after a year; he joined an orchestra in Munich, which he exchanged after three years for the orchestra of the Vienna Court Opera. In 1911 he settled in Chicago, from where he covered the United States . In 1912 he became principal cellist of the orchestra in Minneapolis, a little later he joined the National Symphony Orchestra (1919-1921). [2] Between 1921 and 1939 he played in the New York Philharmonic Orchestra . Another period of concert tours followed, but was associated with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra between 1938 and 1941 . In the United States he was also a well-known chamber musician, between 1919 and 1923 in the “New York Trio” with Scipione Guidi/Louis Edlin and Clarence Adler; and in the thirties “Van Vliet Trio” with Charles Liohter and Jerome Rappaprot. He taught for years at University of Colorado (1948-1953).
