She studied at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag under Arnold Spoel and Mrs. Hekking, and later with Pauline de Haan-Manifarges in Rotterdam. She made her debut as a concert singer in Leiden in 1910. In 1917, she made her stage debut at the Théâtre de la Haye as Dalila in Samson et Dalila by C. Saint-Saëns. She performed with several Dutch opera societies and made a notable guest appearance in 1920 as Dalila alongside Jacques Urlus in Paris.

During the 1924-1925 season, she achieved significant success at La Scala as Erda and Fricka in Wagner’s Ring Cycle. She also performed at the Teatro Fenice in Venice and undertook a tour of Australia. In 1926, she sang Gustav Mahler’s 2nd Symphony in New York under Willem Mengelberg. Her concert performances were highly praised in London.

In 1928, she returned to her native Netherlands, where she appeared infrequently in concert halls. In 1936, she sang the role of Fricka in Die Walküre in Amsterdam. Her final concert took place in The Hague in 1940. She was married to lawyer van Buuren, from whom she separated in 1928.
