HENDRIK APPELS (AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS, 22 JANUARY, 1886 – BERLIN, GERMANY, 22 SEPTEMBER, 1947)

 

 

 

 

He was one of the leading Heldentenors of his time. Initially, he studied dental medicine in Amsterdam before moving to Berlin for vocal training. He made his debut at the Stadttheater in Freiburg in 1920. During the 1921-1922 season, he performed at the Stadt-Theater of Barmen-Elberfeld. From 1922 to 1923, he was the principal tenor at the Stadttheater in Chemnitz.

His career continued at the Volksoper in Berlin (1923-1925), Staatsoper in München (1925-1928), Theater of Graz (1928-1929), Stadttheater in Kiel (1930-1934), Stadttheater in Dortmund (1934-1936), and finally at the Landestheater in Neustrelitz (1938-1940). He also made several guest appearances at the Staatsoper in Wien during the 1923-1928 seasons, performed at the Stadttheater in Basel in 1920, and appeared in The Hague in 1939.

In 1924, he made a guest appearance at the Opernhaus in Köln. His repertoire included roles such as Max in Der Freischütz, Lohengrin, Siegmund, Siegfried, and Loge in Der Ring des Nibelungen, Parsifal, as well as the title roles in H. Pfitzner’s Palestrina and G. Vollerthun’s Der Freikorporal. He also performed as Radames in Aida, Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera, and Luigi in Il Tabarro. After retiring from the stage, he taught singing in Berlin.
