HENDRIK DROST (AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS, 5 JUNE, 1891 † NÜRNBERG, GERMANY, 17 MAY, 1963)
He studied under Cateau Esser in Amsterdam and began his career in Holland and Belgium before being engaged by the Opera in Antwerpen until 1927. In 1928, he joined the Opernhaus in Nuremberg, where he became particularly popular with the opera audience and remained with the company until 1956.
His extensive repertoire included major roles such as Manrico in Il Trovatore, Florestan in Fidelio, Erik in Der fliegende Holländer, Siegfried in Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, Canio in Pagliacci, Schwalb in Mathis der Maler, Cavaradossi in Tosca, and Pedro in Tiefland. He was known for his powerful performances and versatility across a wide range of operatic works.
In 1930, he appeared in the premiere of Hans Grimm’s opera Der Tag im Licht in Nuremberg. His talents also brought him to other German cities such as Munich, Coburg, and Stuttgart, as well as to Graz. In the same year, he performed in the German premiere of Riccardo Zandonai’s Il Cavalieri di Ekebù in Nuremberg. Additionally, in 1933, he starred in the premiere of L. Roselius’s opera Godiva at the same venue.
After his retirement, he dedicated himself to teaching singing in Nuremberg, sharing his expertise with the next generation of vocalists. His wife was the renowned soprano Minna Drost, adding to their family’s legacy in the world of opera.
