LOUIS DORNAY (AMSTERDAM, 6 MARCH, 1876 – HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA, 12 AUGUST, 1940)

 

 

 

 

His real name was Louis Goldsteen. He made his debut in 1909 with the Opera-Vereeniging (Opera Company) as Walter van der Vogelweide in Wagner’s Tannhäuser. In 1910, he performed the role of Don José in Carmen, with Irma Lozin as Carmen.

Between 1909 and 1925, he had a notable career in the Netherlands, including regular performances with the Franse Opera in The Hague from 1914 to 1918. His repertoire there included roles such as Arnold in Guillaume Tell, Faust, Radames in Aida, Tannhäuser, the Duke in Rigoletto, Manrico in Trovatore, and Eleazar in La Juive.

He performed with various notable singers, including Maartje Offers (Amneris in Aida and Dalila in Samson et Dalila), Joy Mac-Arden (Marguerite in Faust), Liesbeth Poolmann-Meisner (Elisabeth in Tannhäuser), Greta Santhagens-Manders (also Elisabeth in Tannhäuser), and Lea Fuldauer (Nedda in Pagliacci).

He also sang abroad, including in Liège, Aachen in 1913, and Berlin. From 1920, he performed in the United States, where he eventually settled, using the stage name Louis Dornay.
