Description
LODEWIJK ALIDUS JOHANNES (LOUIS) VAN TULDER (AMSTERDAM, 22 MAY, 1892 – HILVERSUM, 12 NOVEMBER, 1969)
He was the son of watchmaker and shopkeeper Wilhelmus Jacobus van Tulder and Johanna Cornelia Smit, who lived or worked for a long time at Haarlemmerstraat 114. He himself married Josephina Maria Winnubst (daughter of a music teacher, died 1955), he remarried in 1961 to Wilhelmina Johanna Beringer, widow of radio play actor Piet te Nuyl sr.
Louis van Tulder was soon half-orphaned; his mother died when he was five years old (January 1898). His father, brothers and sisters kept him, born as the last child, on a short leash. However, singing was instilled in him from an early age because his father and brothers sang in the church choir of De Posthoorn on the Haarlemmerstraat. So at the age of eight he was already able to step in as a boy soprano in the church choir. He wanted to continue with that from an early age, but his father did not like that, partly because one of his older brothers Fortunatus van Tulder had already mapped out a musical career. He went to work in a liqueur distillery and from 1911 as a bank clerk at the Amsterdamsche Bank (according to his registration in the militia register). After his voice started to deteriorate early on, he joined the choir of the Vereniging Roman-Katholieke Kerkzangers (Association of Roman Catholic Church Singers) of Anton ter Steege. He heard his good voice and placed him with singing teacher Magdalena Geertruida Meerum Terwogt in 1900. Later, Aaltje Noordewier-Reddingius followed as teacher.
