DAVID DE GROOT (ROTTERDAM, 25 OCTOBER, 1880 – LONDON, 22 MAY, 1933)

David de Groot, Dutch-born violinist, universally known as De Groot, who for 25 years with his orchestra entertained patrons at the Piccadilly Hotel, London. He and his orchestra were also frequent broadcasters with the B.B.C. in its early days as well as prolific recording artists for the H.M.V. label.

David de Groot was born in Rotterdam on 25 October 1880 to Emanuel de Groot (d. 1909), a double bass player, and his wife, Clara (née Rijs). From an impoverished background, he showed early promise as a musician, so much so that he won free tuition from one of Holland’s greatest teachers of the violin. In 1903 he joined an orchestra in Paris and shortly afterwards settled in London, where on 11 June 1905 he was married at the New West End Synagogue, St. Petersburg Place to Mina Trytel (1884-1970). By 1911 he was firmly established as musical director and leader of the house orchestra of the Piccadilly Hotel, London, the year in which his first recordings were issued by H.M.V. De Groot was naturalized a British Citizen on 26 April 1915 (National Archives, Kew, HO 334/77, no. 653). He died at the age of 52, having been for some time suffering from heart failure, at his home, 3a Montagu Mansions, Gloucester Place, London on 22 May 1933.
