ELISABETH GERÖ (BUDAPEST, DECEMBER 22, 1895 – AFTER 1938)

 

 

 

 

Her real (Hungarian) name was Erzsi György. She received her training in Budapest, where she made her debut at the Volksoper in the years before the First World War. After several seasons of engagement at that house, she joined the Vienna Volksoper for the 1917–18 season, but soon returned to Budapest. In 1922 she was re-engaged by the Vienna Volksoper, where she remained until 1926. From 1927 to 1933 she was a member of the Leipzig Opera House, appearing in the world premiere of Satuala by E. N. von Reznicek (1927) and in The Life of Orestes by E. Krěvenek (1930), where she sang the role of Thamar.

During this time, she also made guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera (1923, 1930), the Dresden State Opera (1927), the Berlin State Opera (1930), as well as at other major German theaters. In 1933, she left Germany and pursued her career as a guest artist. She appeared in Paris in 1935 and at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels in 1936. She later settled in Switzerland, where she was engaged at the Stadttheater in Bern from 1938 to 1940.

At the beginning of her career, she was heard mainly in coloratura roles, such as the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte, Gilda in Rigoletto, Oscar in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, Violetta in La Traviata, Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Philine in Thomas’s Mignon, Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, and Zerbinetta in R. Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos. Later, she also took on more lyrical parts, including Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, Marzelline in Fidelio, Antonia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Mimì in La Bohème, Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, and Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly.

In addition to her operatic work, she enjoyed a successful career as a concert and lieder singer.
