LOUISE KIRKBY LUNN (MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, 8 NOVEMBER, 1873 – LONDON, ENGLAND, 17 FEBRUARY, 1930)

 

 

 

 

She began her vocal studies with J. H. Greenwood in Manchester, later advancing under the guidance of Alberto Antonio Visetti in London. Her early experience included a 1893 debut performance at the Drury Lane Theater in London, where she performed as Margaret in Schumann’s Genoveva and appeared in Le Roi l’a dit by Delibes. That same year, she gave her first concert in London, marking the start of her concert career.

Her formal stage debut came in 1896 at the London Comique Opera, where she created the role of Nora in the world premiere of Charles Stanford’s opera Shamus O’Brien. This success led to performances at the Harris Opera Theater and subsequent appearances with the Carl Rosa Opera Company from 1897 to 1899.

Following her marriage in 1899, she briefly stepped away from performing but made a celebrated return to the stage at London’s Covent Garden Opera in 1901. She remained with Covent Garden until 1914 and later rejoined for the 1921-1922 season, establishing a respected career in the London opera scene.
