ARTHUR CARRON (COX) (SWINDON, UNITED KINGDOM, 12 DECEMBER, 1900 – SWINDON, UNITED KINGDOM, 10 MAY, 1967)
He studied in London and made his debut in 1929 at the Old Vic Theater under his real name, Arthur Cox. He continued to perform at the Sadler’s Wells Opera in London from 1930, where he appeared as Arthur Carron, focusing mainly on heroic roles from the Italian opera repertoire and Wagnerian heroes.
In 1931 and 1939, he also performed at Covent Garden in London. In 1936, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Canio in Pagliacci. The following year, he took part in the world premiere of the opera The Man Without a Country by Damrosch at the Met. He was a valued member of the Metropolitan Opera until 1946, gaining particular acclaim as a Heldentenor, notably in roles such as Tristan and Siegmund. His career was notably supported by the renowned soprano Florence Easton, who worked with him on the German repertoire.
From 1946 to 1952, he was engaged at Covent Garden in London. In 1948, he performed at the Edinburgh Festival. He also appeared at the Chicago Opera, Philadelphia Opera, and in Mexico City (1945-46). His international engagements included performances in Rio de Janeiro (1941 as Samson and Otello), Havana (1942), Santiago de Chile (1944), Montreal, and Buenos Aires (1941-43).
