BENVENUTO FINELLI (LONDON, ENGLAND, 1910 – LONDON, ENGLAND, 1987)
His real name was Bennett Fynn, and he was a pupil of the renowned pedagogue John Tobin in London. In 1941, he made his debut under his real name as Almaviva in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia. In 1942, he became a member of the Sadler’s Wells Opera, and in 1945, he joined the Carl Rose Opera Company. During his time with these companies, he performed roles such as the Duke in Rigoletto, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and once again Almaviva.
Fynn furthered his vocal studies under Italian tenors Dino Borgioli in London, and Romeo Berti and Amedeo Bassi in Italy. He specialized in the Italian Bel Canto repertoire and later adopted the stage name Benvenuto Finelli. He gained prominence in the 1950s, particularly in England, as a singer for various broadcasting companies.
After retiring from the stage in 1971, Finelli transitioned to teaching and became a singing instructor in London.
