His voice was discovered by the famous soprano Marie Brema. However, his debut was delayed by the outbreak of the First World War. He served as a soldier, participating in battles in France, Salonika, Egypt, and Palestine. After the war, he completed his studies with Giuseppe Borgatti in Milan. In 1924, he made his stage debut at the Teatro Carcano in Milan as Almaviva in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. He then performed in Turin, Genoa, and Bologna before returning to England in 1925. Initially, he worked at the Old Vic Theatre in London, debuting as the Duke in Rigoletto, followed by performances with the British National Opera Company, where he debuted as Roméo in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette.

In 1929, he debuted at Covent Garden in London as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. This marked the beginning of a long and successful career at Covent Garden, where he appeared until 1947. In 1932, he performed at His Majesty’s Theatre in London in the operetta Die Dubarry by Millöcker-Mackeben. During the 1934-1938 seasons, he achieved great success at the Glyndebourne Festival, singing Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, and Basilio in Le nozze di Figaro. During the Second World War, he sang with the Carl Rosa Opera Company and gave concerts for English soldiers. In the 1957-1958 season, he reappeared with the New Opera Company. His son, John Heddle Nash (1928-94), also had a significant career as a baritone.
