MAURICE D’OISLY (TUNBRIDGE WELLS, ENGLAND, 2 NOVEMBER, 1882 – LONDON, ENGLAND, 12 JULY, 1949)

 

 

 

 

He studied singing in France at the Collège de Blois under Maurice Noël and later won the prestigious Westmoreland Prize. Initially trained as a pianist by Tobias Matthay, he eventually returned to singing and continued his vocal studies with Fred King in London. In 1909, he made his debut at Covent Garden Opera in London as David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. In 1910, he performed as Aegisthus in the English premiere of Richard Strauss’s opera Elektra and also appeared in the staged premiere of Debussy’s L’Enfant prodigue that same year. He remained with Covent Garden Opera until 1912, with a return engagement in 1919. He also worked with the Quinlan Opera Company and the Beecham Opera Company, and in 1911, he participated in a guest tour of Australia. He married the troupe’s prima donna, Rosina Buckman (d. 1948).

His stage repertoire included roles such as Jaquino in Fidelio, Belmonte in The Abduction from the Seraglio, Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff, Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and the Emperor in Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol. In 1919, solo recordings and duets with Rosina Buckman were released by Columbia, following earlier recordings for Odeon in 1912, which included excellent interpretations of Handel arias.
