EINO ALFRED RAUTAVAARA (ILMAJOKI, 14 MARCH, 1876 – HELSINKI, 7 AUGUST, 1939)
From 1903 to 1906 and in 1910, he studied singing in Rome, in Berlin in 1906, in Paris in 1909, and in Milan in 1911 and 1914. He was the conductor of Kallio Church in Helsinki, where he also worked as a musician in 1900. He continued his work at Kallio Church from 1912 onwards and taught singing at the Helsinki Music Institute from 1907 to 1909, and at the Kirkkomusiikkiopisto from 1922. Rautavaara was a founder of the Finnish Opera and one of Finland’s first professional opera singers. His son was the composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. His brother, Gustaf Wäinö Rautawaara (1872-1950), was also a singer and choir director. Wäinö Rautawaara’s children were the opera singer Aulikki Rautawaara and cellist Pentti Rautawaara. Another of Eino Rautavaara’s brothers was A. E. Rautavaara, who served as Permanent Secretary and Justice Minister.
