MAIKKI JÄRNEFELT (JOENSUU, FINLAND, AUGUST 26, 1871 – TURKU, FINLAND, JULY 4, 1929)

 

 

 

 

Her real name was Maikka Pikkarinen, under whom she also performed at the beginning of her career. She studied singng under Mathilde Marchesi de Castrone in Paris and with Julius Hey in Berlin. In 1893 she married the important Finnish composer and conductor Armas Järnefelt (1869-1958). She made her debut in 1895 at the Opera House in Wroclaw. She remained in Wroclaw until 1899 and later sang at the New Royal Opera House in Berlin, at the Municipal Theater of Magdeburg and at the Opera House in Dusseldorf. She also made guest appearances at the Bayreuth Festival (1899), at the Stadttheater in Bremen, at the Vienna Court Opera (1906), at the Royal Opera of Copenhagen and Stockholm. She appeared mainly in the Wagner repertoire. She also took part in opera performances organized by Armas Järnefelt in Helsinki. In 1908 she separated from Armas Järnefelt and married in 1910 in his second marriage to the Finnish composer Selim Palmgren (1878-1951). She continued her career at the Scandinavian opera theaters. In 1915 she appeared at the Copenhagen Opera as Senta in “Fliegenden Holländer” and as Elsa in “Lohengrin”. When Selim Palmgren was appointed professor at the Eastman Conservatory in Rochester, New York, in 1923, she followed him to North America. Later she taught singing in her Finnish homeland.
