ESTER ADABERTO (NAPLES, 1872 – MILAN, 1951)

 

 

 

Her real name was Ester Nunez de Arce. At the age of two, she moved with her family to Milan. She studied singing under Emma Dotti and, in 1897, after participating in some recitals in Milan, made her debut at the Teatro Nuovo in Mirandola in R. Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. She developed her career mainly abroad and spent several years as a member of the Castellano Opera Company, active in Eastern Europe. Around 1905, she moved to the United States, where she enjoyed a long and successful career. She retired from the stage following the death of her son during the First World War. She made only three recordings.

FANY TORESELLA (TORRESELLA) (TIFLIS, 1856 – ROME, 1914)

 

 

 

She was the daughter of the Italian choir conductor Antonio Torresella. She studied singing with her father and made her debut in 1870 at the opera house of Trieste as Fenena in Verdi’s Nabucco. For more than 20 years, she performed in the Italian provinces, Russia, and South America, also giving guest appearances in Austria, Spain, Egypt, Portugal, and London. In 1896, she created the role of Musetta in the Buenos Aires premiere of Puccini’s La Bohème at the Teatro de la Opera. In 1884, she appeared at La Scala as Marguerite de Valois in Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots, returning there in 1894 and 1904. She also sang at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples (1887), and in Buenos Aires (1889, 1897, 1900), as well as in Spain. On 17 January 1901, she appeared at the Teatro Regio in Turin in Mascagni’s Le Maschere, and in 1904 she sang Gilda in Rigoletto opposite Titta Ruffo. After 1909, she gave only occasional guest performances and concerts in Italy and South America. She spent her final years living in Rome.
