ALDO SINNONE (ALEXANDRIA, 10 JULY, 1904 – MILANO, 16 DECEMBER 1947)

Aldo Sinnone belonged to the once numerous Italian minority in Egypt. He pursued a successful operatic career that took him to several major European theaters.

He appeared at La Scala in Milan in 1936, 1940, and 1947, and was also active on international stages. In Paris, he was heard as the Duke in Verdi’s Rigoletto on October 21, 1917. He later performed in Zürich (1946) and at the Vienna Staatsoper, where he sang in Il barbiere di Siviglia alongside Toti Dal Monte and Luigi Montesanto, and in La sonnambula, again partnering Toti Dal Monte.

In 1935, Sinnone undertook a notable series of performances in the Netherlands, appearing with the Italian Opera Company in Amsterdam, The Hague, and other cities. His Dutch engagements included:

La traviata (Amsterdam, Theater Carré, October 20, 1935) with Jolanda Cirillo/Mercedes Capsir, Piero Basini/Francesco Valentino, conducted by Vincenzo Marini (sharing the role with Gaspare Rubino);

Tosca (Amsterdam, Stadsschouwburg, October 22, 1935) with Sara Scuderi, Piero Basini/Spartaco Marchi, conducted by Vincenzo Marini;

Faust (The Hague, Gebouw voor Kunsten en Wetenschappen, October 31, 1935) with Sara Scuderi, Gregorio Melnik, Leo Piccioli/Francesco Valentino, conducted by Ferruccio Calusio;

Lucia di Lammermoor (Amsterdam, Theater Carré, November 3, 1935) with Mercedes Capsir, Spartaco Marchi, Eraldo Coda, Pietro Mariotti, conducted by Ferruccio Calusio;

La bohème (Amsterdam, Theater Carré, November 12, 1935) with Sara Scuderi, Mafalda Chiorboli, Spartaco Marchi, Luigi Sardi, and Eraldo Coda, conducted by Ferruccio Calusio (shared with Gaspare Rubino);

Rigoletto (Amsterdam, Theater Carré, November 24, 1935) with Francesco Valentino, Mercedes Capsir/Nunù Sanchioni, Luigi Balza, Palmira Vitali, and Vittorio Baldo, conducted by Ferruccio Calusio and Vincenzo Marini.

Sinnone’s career, which bridged the interwar and postwar periods, reflected the mobility and prominence of Italian singers active throughout Europe during that era.
