FILIPPO D’OTTAVI

 

 

 

In 1903, he achieved great success performing as Manrico in Verdi’s Il Trovatore and as Raoul in Meyerbeer’s Gli Ugonotti at the Teatro Tivoli in Barcelona. In 1906, as a member of the touring Lombardi Opera Company, he appeared as Radames in Verdi’s Aida at San Francisco’s Central Theater, sharing the stage with the renowned soprano Ester Adaberto and baritone Angelo Antola.

UBALDO DE CELES PEZZUTTI

 

 

 

Pezzutti was an Italian tenor active primarily in the early decades of the 20th century. He made his debut at the Teatro Verdi in Vicenza, performing the role of Alfredo in La Traviata. His repertoire included leading parts in major Italian operas, with frequent appearances in La Traviata (Alfredo), Il Trovatore (Manrico), Ernani (Ernani), and Norma (Pollione). He was also active in concert performances, showcasing his voice in recitals and oratorio works.

Pezzutti performed across Italy in theaters such as Vicenza (Teatro Verdi), Fermo (Teatro dell’Aquila), Zara (Teatro Verdi), Pisa (Teatro Rossi), Bologna (Politeama Azeglio), Lucera (Teatro Garibaldi), Pavia (Teatro Fraschini), Asti (Teatro Alfieri), Palermo (Politeama Garibaldi), and Cuneo (Teatro Civico). His appearances spanned from at least 1904 to 1926, indicating a steady, if not widely celebrated, career.

 

 

OTTAVIO FROSINI (LASTRA A SIGNA, 1866 – LASTRA A SIGNA, 1945)

 

 

 

Ottavio Frosini was born into a family where his father owned a small construction company. Initially working as an engineer, he later discovered his vocal talent and began studying singing under the pedagogue Guglielmo Bellini. He further refined his voice in Rome with Aristide Franceschetti.

After just a few months of study, he made his concert debut on October 21, 1894, at the Circolo Sabatio in Bracciano. His performance was met with great acclaim, as reported by the local Chronicle:

“The flower of the countryside… applauded especially the young tenor Ottavio Frosini, who was asked to repeat several pieces three times.”

In 1896, he made his stage debut at the Della Fenice in Lastra a Signa in La Forza del Destino. He then sang successfully as Alfredo in La Traviata at the Teatro Sociale in Bevagna. According to the Chronicle,

“The beautiful voice of tenor Frosini left a strong impression, leading to requests for encores and enthusiastic ovations.”

Frosini went on to appear at prominent venues, including Teatro Mercadante in Naples (1898), Teatro Rossini in Venice (1899), and Teatro Costanzi in Rome (1900). In 1900, he also made a guest appearance at the Teatro Princesa in Madrid, where he performed in L’Africana, Carmen, and Gli Ugonotti.

Throughout his career, Frosini performed internationally, including in Rio de Janeiro (1903), São Paulo (1903), San Francisco (1905), Lisbon (1906), and Alexandria (1909). He likely retired from the stage in 1910.

He likely made his debut in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1907, he went to Italy, where, after several years as a principal tenor, Gabardi transitioned to performing as a comprimario and retired from the stage around 1916.
