GIUSEPPE MAURO (PIANA DE’ GALLI, PALERMO, 1880 – NEW YORK, 1928)

 

 

 

 

He studied singing in Milan under the guidance of Nino Cairone and made his operatic debut in 1901 at the Teatro Sociale in Casalmaggiore, performing in La Forza del Destino. In 1911, he moved to the United States, where he eventually retired from the stage and established the Mural Singing School. Dedicated to teaching, he built a reputation as a respected vocal instructor. Tragically, during a concert by his students at Carnegie Hall, he passed away during the intermission due to illness, marking a sudden and poignant end to his career in music education.

 

 

DOMENICO CASTIGLIONE (SAVONA, 1877 – FIRENZE, 1963)

 

 

 

Probably he made his debut at the Teatro Sesto Fiorentino, in the Arena Solerti, in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera.

Probably he made his debut in 1912. During his career, Re also appeared abroad, including at the Teatro Marconi in Buenos Aires.

AMERIGO GENTILINI (PISA, 1910 – PISA, 1988)

 

 

 

He first sang in a school choir and, in 1927, joined the cathedral choir of Pisa. Later, he learned the trade of a typographer. His voice was trained by the pedagogues Barsanti and Amatucci in Pisa, where he also made his debut in 1939 as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. In 1940, he appeared at the Teatro Verdi in Pisa as Arturo in I Puritani. In 1941, he was a guest at the Teatro Comunale in Larderello as Ernesto in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale. The following year, he performed at the Teatro Metastasio in Prato, singing the role of the Duke in Rigoletto. In 1948, Gentilini appeared with great success at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona in Il barbiere di Siviglia. After the death of his wife in 1953, he retired from the stage and returned to Pisa, where he sang again with the cathedral choir.

VLADIMIRO BADIALI (MODENA, ITALY, 1904 – ? 1993)

 

 

 

The name of this totally forgotten tenor is usually associated on the web with the famous Spanish tenor Giacomo Aragall, who traveled to Milan on a scholarship from the Liceu to study with him. Among his pupils were Giuseppe Giacomini, the great Italian international tenor, the Genoese lyric-spinto tenor Ottavio Garaventa, and tenor Bruno Prevedi, who sang widely in Italy.

From approximately 1930 to 1950, he had a prolific career in various Italian opera houses. In 1930, he appeared at the Teatro Lirico in Milan in La Bohème and Cavalleria rusticana, sharing the roles of Rodolfo and Turridu with Franco Corbetta. In the same year, together with Rosina Sasso, Giuseppe Sardo, and Marchi Farina, he performed at the Teatro della Commenda in Milan, again in La Bohème and Cavalleria rusticana.

In 1931, he moved to Rome and sang at the Teatro Adriano as the Duke in Rigoletto and as Elvino in La Sonnambula. He repeated the role of the Duke at the Teatro Comunale in Forlì. In 1933, he performed in Schio at the Teatro Civico, appearing in Vincenzo Bellini’s La Sonnambula.

During his career, he also sang in Pistoia, Asti, Genoa, and Venice. Badiali retired from the stage around 1950. He made a few recordings under the name Bruno Garbi for the Excelsius label.
