FRANCISCO VIÑAS (FRANCESC VIÑAS I DORDAL) (BARCELONA, 27 MARCH, 1863 – BARCELONA, 14 JULY, 1933)

 

 

 

 

He began his musical studies at the Conservatory of Barcelona with Gonzalo Tintorer and later with Goula. He made his debut in 1888 at Mataró, and the same year, he achieved significant success with his debut at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona as Lohengrin.

In 1889, Viñas made his debut at La Scala in Milan, also as Lohengrin, receiving critical acclaim. Over the next few years, he performed at major Italian theaters such as the Teatro Regio in Turin and the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, expanding his repertoire to include roles in Cavalleria Rusticana, Mefistofele, and L’Africaine.

Viñas made his debut at Covent Garden in London in 1893 and the following year at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. In 1895, he appeared for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. That same year, he substituted for tenor Giovanni Battista De Negri in Tannhäuser in Genoa.

In 1897, he sang at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. By 1904, Viñas was back at La Scala, where he performed in Alberto Franchetti’s Germania. He also made a guest appearance at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon in 1908, where he sang in Tristan und Isolde.

In 1913, he appeared at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona as Parsifal, alongside Margot Kaftal, Cesare Formichi, and Vincenzo Bettoni. He returned to the Teatro Liceo in 1916 to perform in Tannhäuser. His final opera performance was in 1918 at the Teatro Liceo, where he sang in J. Manen’s Acte.

Viñas was married to mezzo-soprano Giulia Novelli, with whom he had performed Carmen in Palermo in 1892. He was notably the Turiddu in the first performance of Cavalleria Rusticana in England in 1893. Known for his powerful and heroic tenor voice, Viñas was considered a worthy successor to the great Spanish tenor Julián Gayarre.
