ANDRÉ GAUDIN (LES SABLES D’OLONNE, 1902 – PARIS, 1986)

 

 

 

 

He received his education at the Paris Conservatory. In 1927, he was engaged by the Paris Opéra-Comique, where he made his debut as Tonio in Pagliacci. He remained with this opera house until 1946, singing roles such as Lescaut in Massenet’s Manon, Scarpia in Tosca, Albert in Massenet’s Werther, and Pelléas in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, his signature role. In 1937, he appeared there in the premiere of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea.

He also made guest appearances at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Opera House in Monte Carlo, and at major provincial opera houses in France. In 1931, 1935, and 1938 he sang at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and in 1937 he appeared at Covent Garden in London as Pelléas in Pelléas et Mélisande.

His repertoire included roles such as Escamillo in Carmen, Germont in La Traviata, Marcello in Puccini’s La Bohème, and Sharpless in Madama Butterfly.
