CHARLES GILIBERT (PARIS, FRANCE, 29 NOVEMBER, 1866 – NEW YORK, USA, 10 NOVEMBER, 1910)

 

 

 

 

He was a pupil of the Conservatoire de Paris and made his debut in 1888 at the Paris Opéra-Comique. In 1891, he joined the ensemble of the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he was highly appreciated and remained until 1900. During his time in Brussels, he appeared in the premieres of Maître Martin by Jan Blockx (1892), La Vivandière by B. Godard (1896), and Tijl Ulenspiegel by Jan Blockx (1900).

From 1894 to 1909, he made guest appearances at Covent Garden, where on June 20, 1894, he sang in the premiere of La Navarraise by J. Massenet. He also performed in the London premieres of G. Charpentier’s Louise (as the father, 1909) and Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame by J. Massenet (1906, as Boniface).

In 1900, he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York and made his debut as Herzog in Roméo et Juliette. He remained with the ensemble until 1903, and during his time at the Met, he performed in the following opera premieres:

  • 1900: La Bohème (Schaunard)
  • 1901: Tosca (Sakristan)
  • 1902: Messaline (Myrrhon)

In 1906, he was engaged by the Manhattan Opera House in New York, where he performed until 1910. In 1908, he created the role of the father in the American premiere of Charpentier’s Louise.

He was married to the Belgian soprano Gabrielle Lejeune, who made recordings under the name Mme Gilibert. He died suddenly.
