HENRI DANGÈS (LYON, 25 NOVEMBER, 1872 – PARIS, 8 NOVEMBER, 1958)
Henri Dangès made his stage debut in 1897 at the Grand-Théâtre de Lyon under the pseudonym Stilermans. He subsequently adopted the name Henri (or Henry) Dangès and pursued a successful career at the major French opera houses. He appeared at the Opéra-Comique (debut in 1898), the Théâtre du Château-d’Eau (Opéra Populaire), where he created the role of Charlotte Corday in Marat by Alexandre Georges on March 6, 1901, and later performed at the Gaîté-Lyrique. He made his debut at the Palais Garnier in 1908 and also sang at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, where he appeared as Balducci in Benvenuto Cellini on April 3, 1913, and as Eurymaque in Pénélope on May 10, 1913.
A particularly important part of his career was devoted to the French provinces, where he undertook numerous successful tours until 1922. He possessed an extensive repertoire and participated in many premieres, eventually portraying more than one hundred and five different roles.
Dangès was also invited to perform internationally. For his artistic and educational activities, Dangès was appointed Officer of the Academy on January 1, 1905, and Officer of Public Instruction on March 19, 1910. In 1905, he resided at 4 rue Victor-Massé in Paris (9th arrondissement), where he also gave singing lessons. He remained domiciled at this address until his death in 1958, at the age of eighty-five.
