PAUL DARAUX (TOULOUSE, FRANCE, 28. 12. 1864 – PARIS, FRANCE, 1907)
He first studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, then pursued vocal studies at the Conservatoire of his hometown. In 1885, he moved to Paris and enrolled at the Conservatoire National, where he became a pupil of Archaimbaud and Achard. In 1888, he began his career as a concert singer, making his debut in the French capital with the Concerts Lamoureux, and later with the Concerts Colonne. With the latter, he performed in works such as Szenen aus Goethes Faust by Robert Schumann, Gluck’s Alceste, and César Franck’s Rebecca.
With the Concerts du Conservatoire, he appeared in J. S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, Aude et Roland by Honnoré, and Job by Henri Rabaud. He enjoyed a long and successful career in the concert halls of France, Germany, Belgium, and Switzerland. In Brussels, as in other centers of international musical life, he gave acclaimed lieder recitals.
Although he never had a true operatic stage career, he did perform Wotan in Siegfried at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. In 1900, he appeared at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in the premiere of Renaud d’Arles, singing the role of the King of Arles. In 1902, during the Festival Lyrique in Paris, he performed King Marke in Tristan und Isolde, alongside Félia Litvinne and Charles Dalmorès, under the baton of Alfred Cortot.
Later in life, he taught at the Paris Conservatoire and was appointed an Officer of the Académie Française.
