EDOUARD COTREUIL (FRANCE, 1874 – ?)

 

 

 

 

During the 1902-1905 seasons, he appeared at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he sang in several opera premieres, including L’Étranger by Vincent d’Indy (January 7, 1903) and Le Roi Arthus by Ernest Chausson (November 30, 1903, as Merlin). In 1908, he participated in the premiere of Salomé by A. Mariotte at the Opera House in Lyon. At Covent Garden in London, he had successful appearances during the 1904-1905, 1919-1920, and 1924-1927 seasons. On April 1, 1913, he performed at the Casino Municipal in Nice in the premiere of Manuel de Falla’s opera La Vida breve in the role of Uncle Salvador. In 1920, he was engaged by the Chicago Opera, where he performed with great success until 1929. He appeared in the American premiere of Ravel’s L’Heure espagnole in 1920 and, on December 30, 1921, in the premiere of Prokofiev’s L’Amour des trois oranges, singing the role of Celio.

His repertoire included roles such as Golo in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Méphistophélès in Gounod’s Faust, Sparafucile in Rigoletto, Césaire in Massenet’s Sapho, Hunding in Wagner’s Die Walküre, and the Prior in Massenet’s Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame.
