ÉTIENNE BILLOT (BÉZIERS, 25 SEPT. 1879 – MARSEILLE, 28 OCT. 1962)

 

 

 

 

After his studies in Paris, he made his debut in 1903 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris as Nilakantha in Léo Delibes’ Lakmé. In 1904, he sang in the Paris premiere of Jules Massenet’s opera Le jongleur de Notre Dame. The following year, he appeared in the premiere of Charles-Marie Widor’s opera Les Pêcheurs de Saint-Jean. He remained a member of the Opéra-Comique until 1908. During the 1908-1914 seasons, he was part of the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he appeared on March 7, 1910, in the premiere of Philippe de Bréville’s opera Éros Vainqueur. In 1911, he sang in Brussels in the premieres of Richard Strauss’s Elektra and Jean Nouguès’ Quo vadis?.

In 1914, he performed in Paris in the first performances of Richard Wagner’s Parsifal and Richard Strauss’s Feuersnot (1911). From 1914 onwards, he performed at various French provincial theatres, including the opera houses of Marseille, Rouen, Bordeaux, Toulouse, and Strasbourg. In 1929, he gave a guest performance in Amsterdam and continued to make guest appearances at the Opéra-Comique during the 1930s. He also made guest appearances at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in 1915, 1920, 1928, 1929, and 1943. Later, he worked as a pedagogue in Marseille.
