HIPPOLYTE BELHOMME (PARIS, 2 DECEMBER, 1854 – NICE, 16 JANUARY, 1923)
He studied singing at the Paris Conservatoire and made his debut in 1879 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris as Baskir in David’s Lalla Rookh. At the Opéra-Comique, he appeared on February 10, 1881, as Crespel in the premiere of Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann. He remained at the Opéra-Comique until 1886, after which he sang at the Lyon Opera House from 1886 to 1889 and at the Marseille Opera House during the 1890-1891 season.
In 1891, he returned to the Opéra-Comique, where he remained a member until the end of his career. In 1894, he performed in the French premiere of Verdi’s Falstaff, singing the role of Pistol. In 1895, he took part in the premiere of Massenet’s La Navarraise, and on February 2, 1900, he appeared in a small role in the premiere of Charpentier’s Louise. From 1902 to 1905, he made guest appearances at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, and in 1907, he performed as Kezal in the French premiere of Smetana’s La Fiancée vendue (The Bartered Bride).
In Brussels, he also took part in the premieres of Massenet’s Grisélidis (1903) and Puccini’s Tosca (1904). He performed at the Paris Grand Opéra in 1892 and 1911 and also sang at the Nice Opera House. In 1910, at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, he appeared in the premieres of Claude Terrasse’s Le Mariage de Télémaque, Gabriel Pierné’s On ne badine pas avec l’amour, and Charles Pons’ Le Voile du Bonheur. He retired from the stage in 1916.
