Description

JEAN CLAVERIE (LOURDES, 8. 11. 1902 – PARIS, 4. 11. 1963)

He first studied at the Conservatory in Toulouse, then at the Conservatoire National de Paris. In 1928, he made his debut at the Paris Opéra as Méphistophélès in Gounod’s Faust. For many years, he enjoyed great success at this opera house in various baritone roles, including Wagnerian parts such as Wotan in Der Ring des Nibelungen. On January 12, 1928, he performed in the world premiere of Sylvio Lazzari’s La Tour de Feu and on March 10, 1936, in the world premiere of Enescu’s Oedipe. Guest appearances took him to leading opera houses across France and Europe.

In 1941, he joined the Opéra-Comique in Paris, debuting as Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail. He also participated in the world premiere of Henry Barraud’s La farce de maître Patelin on June 26, 1948, and performed roles such as Escamillo in Carmen, Ramon in Gounod’s Mireille, Nilakantha in Delibes’ Lakmé, and Germont in La Traviata. In March, he appeared at the Nice Opera in the world premiere of Charles Silver’s Quatre-Vingt-Treize.

After retiring from active performance, he served as a professor at the Conservatoire de Paris from 1953 until his death. His daughter, Michèle Claverie (born 1939), became a well-known coloratura soprano, and his younger brother also became a prominent singer under the name Charles Clavensy (1914–1988).
