Description
ALICE RAVEAU (PARIS, FRANCE, 8 AUGUST, 1884 – PARIS, FRANCE, 13 MAY, 1945)
She studied singing at the Paris Conservatoire under Dubulle and made her debut in 1908 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, performing the title role in Gluck’s Orphée. This role became her signature, and she was celebrated for her interpretation of Orpheus throughout her career. In 1911, she reprised the role at the Arena d’Orange. Her talent was further showcased in the premieres of Samuel-Rousseau’s Léone and Ernest Bloch’s Macbeth at the Opéra-Comique in 1910, and in 1920, she appeared in the premiere of Sylvio Lazzari’s Le Sauteriot.
On March 4, 1913, she performed at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in the premiere of Gabriel Fauré’s Pénélope. Alongside Orpheus, one of her other star roles was Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther, a part that solidified her reputation as a prominent interpreter. She was often seen as the successor to Marie Delna at the Opéra-Comique.
In 1929, she achieved one of her greatest successes at the Grand Opéra in Paris, performing as Dalila in Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila. After this period, she embarked on guest performances at major French opera houses in Marseille, Toulouse, and Bordeaux. She gradually shifted her focus to concert appearances, becoming one of the most respected interpreters of French art song of her time.
In 1934, she expanded her career internationally, giving recitals in Scandinavia, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
