MARIE CHARBONNEL (LYON, 1880 – ? 1962)

She received her education at the Conservatoire de Lyon and made her debut in 1901 at the Opéra National de Lyon, where she performed roles such as Carmen, Amneris in Aida, Azucena in Il Trovatore, and Dalila in Samson et Dalila by Saint-Saëns. In 1907, she was engaged by the Grand Opéra in Paris, where she began her tenure with the role of Dalila in Samson et Dalila.

In 1908, she appeared in the Paris premiere of Richard Wagner’s Götterdämmerung and, the following year, sang Erda in the premiere of Das Rheingold. From 1910 onward, she also performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where on November 30, 1910, she participated in the premiere of Ernest Bloch’s Macbeth. On November 15, 1911, she sang in the premiere of Albéric Magnard’s Bérénice, and later that year, she appeared in the premiere of Saint-Saëns’ L’Ancêtre.

She also performed at prominent opera houses throughout the French provinces, and in 1913, she appeared at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, further solidifying her reputation as an accomplished operatic mezzo-soprano.
