GINETTE DOYEN (MONTCEAU-LES-MINES, 10 JULY, 1921 – CAUMONT-L’ÉVENTÉ, AUGUST 27, 2002)

Geneviève Marie Andrée Charlotte (nicknamed Ginette) Doyen, daughter of André Doyen, engineer, and Louise Tétard, was born on July 10, 1921 in Montceau-les Mines.

Her musicality appeared at a very young age and when she was seven years old, she gave her first concert. Three years later, she was accepted at the Paris Conservatory where she studied with Lazare Lévy 1. She was awarded several times during her studies, but also at music competitions, notably at the Concours International Gabriel Fauré. Her career thus began quickly, although the outbreak of war had a temporary negative impact. She had a vast repertoire ranging from Bach and music of the classical and romantic period, to more modern composers such as Fauré, Franck, Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky and Gershwin.

She performed as a soloist, notably with the Orchestre national de France and the Lamoureux, Colonne and Pasdeloup Orchestras. Outside France, in Europe, Africa, India and Japan, she played with many international orchestras.

A number of recordings were made by Westminster in New York, Vega in Paris and Nipon Westminster in Tokyo, including Mendelssohn’s Lieder ohne Worte and Chabrier’s Dix pièces pittoresques (both premieres on disc), Chopin’s Ballades, Jacques Ibert’s Histoires, Beethoven’s piano and violin sonatas, sonatas by Gabriel Fauré, Florent Schmitt and Debussy, often accompanied by the violinist Jean Fournier (brother of the cellist Pierre Fournier) whom she married on 12 August 1946.
