Description
CAMILLE BORELLO (LATER AS COMTESSE D’ARTAUX)
Camille Borello was a French soprano active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her early career received significant support from composer Jules Massenet, who, between 1898 and 1901, mentored her through personal letters—encouraging her study of roles such as Manon, Mignon, and Sophie (Werther). Massenet also provided recommendations and arranged introductions to help advance her engagements.
Borello appeared at major venues in France and the United States. She sang Micaëla in Carmen at the Opéra-Comique on 19 May 1901 and created the role of Cendrillon in Pauline Viardot’s opera at the Salons de Mlle de Aogeiras in Paris on 23 April 1904. Her career extended overseas: she performed Micaëla in Carmen at the Manhattan Opera House (9 November 1907) and portrayed Antonia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann (7 December 1907).
Her engagements demonstrate her versatility and international recognition as an interpreter of French repertoire.
