JEANNE LECLERC (LILLE, FRANCE, 1868 – PARIS, 1914)
Already in 1889 she appeared at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. On May 30, 1890, she sang a small part in the premiere of André Messager’s opera La Basoche at this theater. During the following fifteen years, she enjoyed a successful career at the Opéra-Comique, where she appeared in roles such as Micaëla in Carmen, Baucis in Philémon et Baucis, Mireille, Mignon, and Rose in Les dragons de Villars.
In 1895 she took part in the premiere of Théodore Dubois’s opera Xavière at the Opéra-Comique, and in 1896 she sang Cupid in the premiere of Gluck’s Orphée there. She appeared as a guest at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in 1891 (including as Micaëla in Carmen), returned there in 1899 to sing in the premiere of Isidore de Lara’s Messaline, and appeared again in 1901.
In 1899 she performed at the Théâtre Renaissance in Paris in the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor. In 1902, at the Théâtre du Château in Paris, she sang Gutrune in the Paris premiere of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung. At Covent Garden in London, she appeared in 1899 as a guest in the premiere of Adam’s Le chalet. In 1900 she was heard at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. At the Opéra-Comique, she frequently appeared alongside the baritone Gabriel Soulacroix.
