MARIE-THÉRÈSE GAULEY (PARIS, FRANCE, 15 FEBRUARY, 1903 – MALAKOFF, FRANCE, 23 JANUARY, 1992)

Her mother, Mme Gauley-Texier (1866–1948), was a well-known mezzo-soprano who performed during the 1911–1912 season at the Paris Grand Opéra and sang at the Monte Carlo Opera from 1918 to 1919. Following her education at the Conservatoire de Paris, she made her debut in 1924 at the Paris Opéra-Comique as Olympia in Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann. She maintained a distinguished career at the Opéra-Comique until the late 1930s.

On May 21, 1925, she performed at the Monte Carlo Opera in the premiere of Maurice Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges. She also appeared in the Paris Opéra-Comique premiere of the same work in 1926, earning enthusiastic praise from the composer for her interpretation. Another signature role was Yniold in Pelléas et Mélisande.

Her repertoire also included roles such as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Lakmé, and Andreloun in Gounod’s Mireille. She was a key participant in numerous premieres of contemporary operas at the Opéra-Comique, including F. Bousquet’s Sarati le Terrible (1928), M. d’Olonne’s Georges Dandin (1930), R. Ducasse’s Cantegril (1931), and O. Letorey’s Le Sicilien ou l’amour peintre (1930). She also took part in a celebrated 1925 revival of Rameau’s Les Indes galantes at the Opéra-Comique.

In 1927, she sang at Aix-les-Bains in the premiere of H. Busser’s opera La pie borgne. Beyond the opera stage, she gained recognition as a concert soloist throughout France.
