Description
MARIE-THÉRÈSE GAULEY (PARIS, FRANCE, 15 FEBRUARY, 1903 – MALAKOFF, HAUTS-DE-SEINE, 23 JANUARY, 1992)
Her mother, Mme Gauley-Texier (1866-1948), was a distinguished mezzo-soprano who performed at the Grand Opéra in Paris during the 1911-1912 season and later at the Monte Carlo Opera from 1918 to 1919. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she received her education at the Conservatoire de Paris and made her debut in 1924 at the Paris Opéra-Comique as Olympia in Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann.
She enjoyed a notable career at the Opéra-Comique throughout the 1920s and 1930s, highlighted by her participation in key premieres. On May 21, 1925, she sang in the premiere of Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges at the Monte Carlo Opera, and she reprised the role for the work’s Paris premiere at the Opéra-Comique in 1926. Ravel himself praised her performance enthusiastically. Among her star roles was Yniold in Pelléas et Mélisande, along with Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Lakmé, and Andreloun in Gounod’s Mireille.
Her impressive repertoire extended beyond the classics to numerous contemporary works. She took part in the premieres of several operas at the Opéra-Comique, including Sarati le Terrible by Bousquet (1928), Georges Dandin by d’Olonne (1930), Cantegril by Ducasse (1931), and Le Sicilien ou l’amour peintre by Letorey (1930). In 1925, she also contributed to a memorable performance of Rameau’s Les Indes galantes.
Additionally, she premiered Henri Busser’s La pie borgne in 1927 at Aix-les-Bains. Alongside her opera career, she was well-regarded as a concert soloist, gaining widespread recognition in France for her versatile talent.
