ALBERT VAGUET (ELBEUF (SEINE-MARITIME), 15 JUNE, 1865 – PAU, 12 FEBRUARY, 1943)

He studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Barbot, Obin, and Ponchard. In 1890, he debuted at the Grand Opéra in Paris as Faust in Gounod’s Faust. Throughout his career, he remained a member of this opera house. Here, he sang the role of David in the 1897 premiere of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Cassio in Verdi’s Otello in 1894, and Hylas in the 1899 premiere of Chabrier’s Briseïs. In 1901, he performed as Marcomir in Les barbares by Saint-Saëns, and in 1899, he sang the title role in Méhul’s Joseph. In 1893, he and his wife appeared in the premiere of Henri Maréchal’s Deïdamie. In 1895, he sang in Tannhäuser at the Grand Opéra, after the debacle of its 1861 premiere. In 1900, he appeared in the premiere of F. L. R. Joncières’ Lancelot.

The artist, who was married to soprano Alba Chrétien-Vaguet, lost a leg in an accident in 1903, which abruptly ended his opera career. He subsequently performed as a concert and recording artist and later worked as a pedagogue in Pau.
